Frequently Asked Volunteer Questions

This section is designed to help give you a better sense of what it’s like to volunteer with Habitat of Franklin County.

What ages can volunteer?

Construction sites have a minimum age of 16.

Youth who are 16 or 17 years old are not permitted to use power tools or ladders. We ask that there be a responsible adult for each 16 or 17 year old volunteering. Beginning at age 14, youth may volunteer for certain activities at the ReStore, please contact the store for more information.

I can’t physically work construction. Is there anything else I can do?

Absolutely!

Our ReStore is the perfect place for people who are interested in volunteering but unable to work at construction for various reasons. Volunteers at the ReStore help to run the cash register, interact with and answer questions from customers, help to load or unload purchases or donations, and help to process (clean up and sometimes repair) donated items.

What should I wear?

Our Dress Code

Construction Sites: Wear work clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Bring your own work gloves and goggles if you don’t want to wear used gloves or used goggles.

ReStore: A vest or ReStore t-shirt will be provided for you to wear so that others know you’re there to help! Closed toe shoes are also recommended.

What should I bring?

Be sure to bring:

  • Your own water and lunch
  • A heart to serve others
  • A willingness to learn

Foundations First: Habitat 101

We believe building homes means building community – and every hand that joins our work matters. Our Volunteer Orientation Program is the foundation to ensure every volunteer, whether swinging a hammer or helping behind the scenes, begins with a clear understanding of our mission, a heart for service, and the tools to make a meaningful difference.

Why “Foundations First”?

Because every stable home begins with a solid foundation – and so does every great volunteer experience.

Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand how volunteers become the backbone of everything we do. From ReStore heroes to construction site crews, from meal providers to committee members, your commitment is what turns vision into reality. But we’ve also recognized that the experience begins well before the first nail is driven or shelf is stocked.

Foundations First provides new (and returning) volunteers with a consistent, engaging, and informative orientation that brings everyone onto the same page – aligned with our values, informed about our operations, and inspired by our mission.

What to Expect

Orientation sessions are offered every week starting July 15, 2025.

Each one-hour session will include:

  • An introduction to Habitat’s mission and impact – locally and globally
  • An overview of volunteer roles, expectations, and safety practices
  • A walkthrough of how to sign up, get involved, and stay connected
  • Time for Q & A and sharing your interests

Ready to Be a Part of the Movement?

Contact us at volunteer@habitatfranklinpa.org, and we’ll be in touch to get you signed up for orientation, and provide you with your next steps. Thank you for partnering with us! Let your journey begin.
